(1) In Mac OS X, a connection that involves the sending of a message from one object to another when a certain user action occurs. For example, when a user presses a button, the button object calls the action method of its target object to notify that object that the action occurred. Industry:Software; Computer
In iPhone OS, used to describe an audio session state in which playback or recording can proceed. Compare inactive.
Industry:Software; Computer
The process of reducing the range of audio signals in a recording, thus decreasing the size of the file. MP3 compression eliminates frequencies less audible to the human ear, though a bit rate below 128Kbps produces a discernible loss in sound quality.
Industry:Entertainment
To bring a running application to the front of the screen, allowing the user to interact with it. Compare launch.

SPL
Sound pressure level. A measure of sound intensity. SPL is commonly expressed as a ratio in decibels relative to 0 dB SPL, or as an absolute level in Pascals (Pa). Although SPL is sometimes used to approximately indicate loudness, the correlation of SPL to loudness is complex due to perceptual factors. See also weighting.
Industry:Software; Computer
Sometimes written as Q8.24 or fx8.24. A fixed-point sample size used as the canonical audio sample type for processing linear PCM audio in iPhone OS, in lieu of 32-bit floating-point samples. In an 8.24 audio sample there are eight bits to the left of the radix point, forming the integer (or “magnitude") portion of the value, and 24 bits to the right, forming the fractional portion.
Industry:Software; Computer
A dialog that appears when the system or an application needs to communicate information to the user. Alerts provide messages about error conditions and warn users about potentially hazardous situations or actions.
