I agree with Melissa. For some children it's just natural to be shy and they shouldn't be forced to be someone else or made to believe that tey are somehow inferior. It's also true that bringing attention to somebody's shyness will only increase it. The best way is not to bring attention to it.

Some ideas: -reading out loud to have the child get used to hearing his/her voice -puppet shows: allows the child to be able to use imagination and be active, while still "hiding" from an audience On the other hand, I was a really shy kid growing up. The more I was pushed into the center of attention or told to be more "loud", the more I recoiled. As long as it doesn't hurt the child, I think it's okay to be shy. Most naturally grow out of it.

I also agree with Melissa, and tereza too. You can't force a child to break out of their natural personality. It's their personality for a reason, just like it's difficult to force an extremely outgoing child to be quiet and reserved. Just let time take its course. Some very outgoing and "wild" adults used to be very shy as children. Just an idea- encouraging a child to be a member of a choir or band could slowly bring a very shy child out of their shell. Of course sports is good too.
