‘playful drama’; an opera that combines serious elements, often portrayed by the aristocracy, with comic relief, often portrayed by peasant characters who comment on the aristocracy. Mozart’s Don Giovanni is called a ‘dramma giocoso’ but by the librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, not by Mozart. The aristocratic characters would include Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, Ottavio, Don Giovanni while the peasant characters would include Zerlina, Masetto, Leporello.
