Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is observed by Christians. Marking the first day of Lent, which lasts until Easter (a period of 46 days), it is the day of repentance. The date of Ash Wednesday differs every year.
The name Ash Wednesday originates from the ashes placed on the foreheads of believers, a practise to mourn the death of Jesus. The ashes are in the shape of a cross. Different Christians denominations observe this day with different practices, some fasting for the entire day, others being allowed bread and water. Most abstain from eating meat. Others maintain the fast throughout the entire Lent period, until after Easter.
