Astronómicamente, este es el período entre el solsticio de invierno y el equinoccio de primavera. Se caracteriza por tener las temperaturas más frías del año, cuando el sol está sobre todo en el hemisferio opuesto. Habitualmente, esto se refiere a los meses de diciembre, enero y febrero en el Hemisferio Norte, y los meses de junio, julio y agosto en el hemisferio sur.
